Paula Steger, born Wiesinger: a pioneer
La Paula and the Hans & Paula Steger foundation
Paula Steger, born Wiesinger, was a successful skier and mountaineer in the 1930s. Born in 1907 in Bolzano/Bozen, she learnt skiing in the 1920s, participating in her first race in 1927. At the age of 25, she was already multiple champion in Italy and in 1932, she won the 1st price in the ski world championship in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
Paula Steger, also called “La Paula”, met her future husband from Bavaria Hans Steger already early in life. Just like her, he was a successful skier. In the beginning he was her ski trainer and companion on alpine tours. The pair blazed numerous challenging climbing trails in the Dolomites, pioneering in the alpine world.
Paula Steger founded the Hans & Paula Steger foundation in 2000, which was intended to administer the family fortune of the married but childless couple and to support charity projects and the conservation of Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm. At the moment the Paula Wiesinger Apartments & Suites in Siusi/Seis, the Hotel Steger-Dellai on Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm, the Laranzer Schwaige and the approx. 58 ha of alpine meadows in the surroundings of the hotel are all property of the foundation.
Honoring Hans and Paula Steger, the Hans & Paula Steger Memory Lane was opened in 2006. In our apartments and lounge rooms, there is a lot to remember the legendary La Paula by, who was active until her passing in 2001. She worked in the Hotel Steger-Dellai and made sure that the projects of the foundation were continued.
